Paris is: magical Montmartre in the spring
In our Paris series, let’s head to magical Montmartre in the spring with this photo story. So much that has been said about Montmartre. This the place where history meets bohemian. A place where extraordinary larger than life characters meet those than have shaped french history.
Ernest Hemingway once said about Paris: “if you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast. Join us as we roam magical Montmartre in the Spring.
Flamboyant and magical Montmartre inspires the greatest
Tracing Montmartre is inspiring. This is the place where bohemians, artists and cultural people once gathered. Picasso, Pissaro or Renoir to name but a few once lived here, finding inspiration in its flamboyance. The more recent character Amelie Poulain finds her bearings here too.
Located a tiny 130m above sea level, the village of Montmartre is the 18th arrondissement of Paris. It wears many faces and one that i particularly identify myself with is it’s bohemian side. Unconventional, free spirited and avant-gardist. That side of Montmartre where the love of arts rises above the norm of bourgeois traditional normality. That side is where the magic comes from.
Montmartre, home to citizen of the world lifestyle
Back in the days, the village of Montmartre is outside the limits of the city. This means that it is exempt of taxes. As such, artists would flock here. The view down below is gorgeous. The wine is cheap. Above all traditional conventions are not the norm here. A perfect illustrations of this is that the nuns of the local church Le Sacre Coeur brew their own wine.
The old windmill known as Le Moulin de la Galette becomes the place where free spirits and artists would meet and quite simply enjoy life. As Zola once said, Montmartre is a place to enjoy the country air and be free of political and other ‘serious’ talk.
La joie-de-vivre of Montmartre blossoms in the spring
Spring really for me is the best time to soak up that special atmosphere in Montmartre. It starts with people as parisians head outdoors to take advantage of the of the new found warmth. Green foliage is in full abondance and Montmartre takes the appearance of a village in the country. A new found energy is in full bloom.
The view is striking from every angle. On a clear spring day, the view of the panorama below is superb. From quaint pedestrians streets to squares, romance oozes out of every cobbled streets. The scenery resemble one of a rom-com movie set. Street performers sparkle at la Place du Tertre.
Spring is the finest of time to indulge in the cafe culture and watch the world go by at one of the many terraces. And lounging on the green at the feet of the Sacre Coeur is all part of that spring joie-de-vivre essential.
